It's hard to believe how much technology has changed over the past few years. Teens are on the leading edge of technology and use it in many different and innovative ways. According to the article Teens, Social Media & Technology 2015, author Amanda Lenhart discusses what social media platforms teens today are using and how they are accessing it. To no ones surprise, smartphones have changed the way we access the internet, especially those who are 13-17 years of age. We no longer have to be tied down to a desktop computer in order to surf the net. Most teens today have a smartphone and use their phones more than any other device to access the internet. Where are teens going? According to Ms. Lenhart, the most visited social media platform for teens is Facebook. I was actually very surprised by this outcome. I feel like Facebook, at this point in time, caters to an older base. Instagram came in second with Twitter and Snapchat gaining some ground. I decided to take this research and conduct my own unofficial poll. I asked some high school students if they could only use one social media platform, which one would it be. Almost every teen said Snapchat was the social media platform they couldn't live without. Their favor with Instagram was waning, and Twitter was really even on their radar. With the advent of the next new technology "must have", I suspect that this research might change significantly in the next couple of years.

Lana,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading my report, I was surprised to find a lot of teens on Facebook. Then again the report is from 2013. A lot of social platforms have emerged since then. I also asked my teenage boys and nieces and nephews, I've found that most of them use Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat even though they do have Facebook accounts. My teens say they keep their Facebook just to keep track of family and friends, but not necessarily to post.
I think Facebook will never go away. However, I think what ever platform the adults join the teens will leave. As more adults joined Twitter more teens went to Snapchat. I have to admit I am more on Facebook than anything but I do like Snapchat. I check my Snapchat everyday and have the icon on my homepage. But no worries....there will be a new platform soon and us "oldies" will find out about a year after the kids have worked out all the bugs.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your personal findings. I believe in 2015, Facebook is no long the "it" thing for the youth.
ReplyDeleteLove your infographic! 30 texts in one day....whew...hope it's unlimited texting. Actually I would have thought it would have been a little higher.
